SELECTED PAST EXHIBITS- 2006/7

"Fletcher Steele: Landscape Architect."

Special Traveling Exhibit on loan from SUNY-ESF.

A collection of mainly photographs covering the major projects of Fletcher Steele.  Steele created over 700 gardens from 1915 to 1971 and is widely regarded as the key figure in the transition from Beaux Arts formalism to modern landscape design.  Steele worked closed with the Choate family in Massachusetts, friends and contemporaries of the Parsons of Rye.  From November 5, 2006 until June 1, 2007 at the Knapp House.

Spotlight on Historical Costumes: Winter. 

A stunning 1897 Parisian dress with a purple velvet jacket and a purple satin skirt. From December 5, 2006 until March 6, 2007 at the Square House.

"Old Deeds and Documents." Featuring some of our earliest archival documents illustrating early Rye land exchanges, including 18th century land-indentures and 17th century parchment. From January 23 until October 1, 2007 at the Square House.

"Early American Toys and Games." The display features artifacts from the collection, such as board games and a tea set as well as modern reproductions of colonial toys for children to handle.  From June 30 until January 23 at the Square House.

"September 11: Rye Remembers." Five years after this tragic event, the exhibit explores and remembers how Rye responded and was strengthened as a community in the face of tragedy.  From September 10 until January 10 at the Square House.

"Danger and Division: Rye during the Revolution." Learn about Rye's role in our country's development during this tumultuous time.  Exhibit includes many artifacts from the RHS collection including military costumes, muskets, newspaper articles and more.  Hands-on section for children.  From March 5 until August 30 at the Square House.

"Native American Tools and Weapons."  A mini-exhibit featuring a rarely seen part of the colection.  From January 10 until April 15 at the Square House.

"Seasonal Changes: The History and Evolution of the Twig in Rye."  At the Square House from October 30 until February 13.

"Rye Memories, circa 1910."  Exhibit of oil paintings by local artist Cary Brown. At the Knapp House from October 8 until January 28. 

"Boston Post Road, c. 1800."  Come see this rare map on loan from a private collector and historian.  The 13-foot long map details the portion of the Post Road from the Mamaroneck Bridge to the Byram River and is hand-drawn on rag paper by prominent surveyor Joseph Mangin. From April 1 until May 15.

  "Whatever Happened to Cottage Park?" An exhibit about a former Rye neighborhood partially shipped in from Nantucket.  From February 11 until August 30.
